Teaching's Secret Weapon
by Robin Eisner
In today's society, we are often focused on goals. A certain text book must be completed by a fixed date, specific lessons must be taught before the Bagrut, holiday information must be learned prior to vacation. We have deadlines to meet, dates to keep, and in our need to be "right" we often overlook the most vital link keeping the chain afloat.
It may sound simple, even too simple, however remembering to smile, pat someone on the back, nod your head, can make or break someone's day.
Remembering to take the time to look someone in the eye and really see that person can change an entire relationship. Whether the student is four or forty, everyone wants to be recognized and accepted. As the teacher, the leader, in the room, students wait for your approval of them. No matter how much one knows or does, the desire for acceptance never diminishes.
Remembering to acknowledge the humanity in your students will result in a chain reaction. Students may suddenly want to attend your class or they may try harder, or even develop a different kind of respect for you.
If you recall your school days when you wore the shoes of a student, it was most likely those teachers who noticed you that left you with the greatest impression. Perhaps they were the classes you most enjoyed. The need for acceptance is a human need, begun in infancy and continues throughout life.
This school year, try an experiment. Become alert in your classroom. Make a point to say a nice word to everyone of your students on a daily basis. It doesn't take more than a moment of your time and it doesn't cost you anything. What is in it for you? The effort you give out will be returned to you multiplied. Teaching happy students can only make your job easier. A placid classroom's energy is much more conducive for achieving that goal of teaching your material. Students who know that their teacher cares about them, about their accomplishments, react positively. See this project as an investment in your success. Then sit back and watch the chain reaction.
The time has come that, as the head of the lion, if we want a change, it is our initiative that will create it. We must make the first step. Then the rest will take care of itself. May this year be the year that you Smiled and watched what happened!
