FROM MIRIAM’S DESK

Dear Colleagues,

This is the final edition of the Grapevine for this year. It is hard to believe that the year is growing to a close – it has seemed to have gone by very quickly. This edition will be devoted to plans and emphases for the coming school year.

The following have been decided on as the main emphases for English for the 2001-2 school year:

Bridging the Gap

1. Elementary - Junior High

2. Junior High - High School

3. Non-readers - Readers.

Implementing the New Curriculum

1. Elementary

2. Junior High

3. High School

Providing Support Systems for:

1. New Teachers

2. Veteran Teachers

3. Teaching Slow Learners

4. Teaching with Television Materials

5 Coping with Changing Needs

The Curriculum is now well established and is being fully implemented by many of you. Many new books are now on the market but I have seen excellent lesson by teachers who have adapted existing textbooks in the light of the Curriculum.

There is a worrying shortage of English teachers. This trend started this year and the forecast for the future is not very optimistic. Many graduates of the Universities and of the Colleges are not joining the profession or are leaving after a year or two. This phenomena is not confined just to the Haifa area but it is countrywide – not that that makes things easier for us here in Haifa. If you know of people who have been working in other fields and would be interested in a new and satisfying second career or if there are teachers of other subjects who would be interested in retraining to become English teachers please let them contact me. We really need them.

May I take this opportunity of wishing you all a very well deserved holiday – take care.

All the best,

Miriam
