Explain the Night
submitted by Adele Raemer - raemer@nirim.co.il

From the album: NOA blue touches blue

Explain the night to me, explain the stars.
Explain the way I feel, explain the scars.
Explain the outline of the trees against the sky.
Explain the tangled words of love we can't untie.

Explain the night to me, explain the black,      5
and how the light was lost and how to get it back.
Explain the rising of the waves to swallow sand.
Explain how difficult it is to hold your hand.

CHORUS: We are wrapped about our needing in a drunken trance.
Will you swing and sway me slowly and pretend to dance?      10
We are wrapped around our sorrow in a strong embrace;
and between your temple and your eye I hide my face.
Explain the night to me; the pregnant moon.
Explain the sudden urge, the empty room.
Explain the way to blue and all the space.      15
Explain the make-up swiftly streaked across my face.

Explain the night to me, explain the past.
Explain the thrill of love and why it cannot last.
Explain the rings that slowly spread across the lake,
and how to someday learn to live with my mistakes.      20

CHORUS

I. General questions:

  1. What do you think this song is about?
  2. Do the words match the melody? What does the melody do for the song?
  3. Were there any words that you didn't know? Did you look them up? Understand them from the context? Ignore them? (Is that wise?)

II. Specific questions:

  1. Why do you think the singer wants these things explained to her?
  2. What do you think she REALLY wants explained to her?
  3. What does she mean when she says: "between your temple and your eye I hide my face." (l.13)
  4. "….the pregnant moon" (l.14) How can the moon be pregnant?
  5. If you were to make this song into a video clip, where would you film it? What would you show? What colors would you use? Describe it in any way you can.

III. Grammar point:

  1. Find all of the instances of the passive in this song.
  2. Transpose them into active.
  3. Why do you think they were written in the passive?

Remember what we learnt about when to use passive:
  • When the doer is unknown or unimportant/irrelevant.
  • When the speaker wishes to emphasize the receiver of the action.
  • When the speaker wishes to express an objective or popular opinion, universally accepted idea (not necessarily his own)

Be ready to report your findings to the rest of the class.
