JELLY (AACI) Kids Read, Jerusalem

Two Important Updates (May 11, 2004)

1) The date of the Event-Kids Read, Jerusalem will take place on Wednesday June 16th & it looks like being a very exciting end to the school year. Please register as soon as possible and remember that we are eagerly awaiting your class voting results!

2) Due to the demand from teachers we are extending the Kids Read, Jerusalem voting to include 'stages'. Please ensure that the voted titles are clearly listed as being simplified readers. With sufficient response we will make a separate recommended list of simplied readers.

Dear English Speakers' teacher:

We at Jelly followed with interest the recent BBC Big Read competition to compile a list of the 100 best-loved books in Britain. This event generated so much enthusiasm for reading that we felt inspired to devise a smaller scaled version here in Jerusalem. We are also planning a lively final event to bring together pupils, their parents and teachers so they can share their reading experiences from the project.

Together with a team of English teachers, we have designed

Kids Read, Jerusalem for you and your pupils and we would like to invite you to be a part of this exciting new project. The project is intended for 3rd- 8th grade English speaking/advanced students and entries will be accepted up to the end of May.

We would like every English teacher in Jerusalem to ask their pupils to discuss their favorite books. The teacher will then draw up a list of the ten most popular books for that grade. The final list will be publicized throughout Jerusalem and hopefully this will generate further interest and discussion.

The Kids Read, Jerusalem project will culminate in a final event to be held in early June. We are inviting you to register your school to participate for the event with your pupils undertaking art/ written work based on their favorite books.

During the event when the results of the voting are announced participating schools will display their work. There will be dramatic presentations, prizes, a book swop and other exciting activities.

All participating schools will receive a gift for their school library.

GUIDELINES FOR VOTING

Thank you very much for helping us with the voting. The following points are for your consideration:

We recommend that you ask your students to construct their lists as homework ideally after a brainstorming activity in class to arouse their interest and enthusiasm. They need sufficient time to think over their vote. NB. We tried making lists as adults and it is not something that you can rush!

Ask your students to write on a piece of paper up to ten (not less than five) of their favorite books in English-that they have read or had read to them.

Collate the results in order to compile a list of the ten most popular books in that grade.

Please complete the following voting form and submit it by e-mail, regular mail or telephone (see below), by 28thMay.

For all queries and for more details about the final event please contact us. We will send you an information sheet.

Please register your school to participate in the event as soon as possible (by April 30th).

Welcome to the project & thank you for your involvement!
