The Hearing Impaired Pupil and the Bagrut Examinations FAQ

  1. Are there accommodations (hakalot) available for the hearing impaired for each of the three Bagrut testing dates (Moed Aleph, Moed Bet and Winter)?
Yes. A hearing impaired pupil can be tested at any of these times.

  2. Does a hearing impaired pupil, who is eligible for accommodations, get a different exam entirely?
No. The school orders a regular exam notebook for the pupil. The special sections are stapled into the notebook along with suitable documentation. The notebook is sent to the "Marvad" to be checked along with the other exams.

  3. How does the school receive the special sections?
The school counselor (yoetzet) should contact the local "Shema" branch several months before the exam (numbers listed below). The sections are sent to the school two weeks before the exam.

  4. Can I receive examples of previous special sections?
Yes. Send a fax message to "Shema" Tel-Aviv with your mailing address and we will mail you the relevant sections (note: over the summer holidays it takes longer because of vacations).

  5. Is a detailed list of the accommodations posted on ETNI or some other site?
No. Not every student with a hearing loss is eligible for all the accommodations. It depends on a number of factors, the main one being the severity of the hearing loss. There are also many changes now with the new curriculum (confusion must be avoided regarding the pupils taking the old format and the new format). Therefore it is important to be in touch with a "Shema" contact regarding each specific pupil.

  6. Who can I turn to for counseling?
Naomi Epstein is the "Shema" counselor for English for the Hearing Impaired.
