READY, STEADY, READ

by Peggy Barzilay, Esther Cantor, Sharon Levy

READY, STEADY, READ is a remedial reading program which targets 5-9 grade non-readers of English. These non-readers may be learning disabled pupils, pupils from underprivileged homes who have not been exposed to the wonder of books, or pupils who may simply have been absent when an important part of the reading process was learnt.

READY,STEADY, READ is being published by Eric Cohen Books and should be in bookstores by the beginning of September. It is based on a sequential, multi-sensory, phonc approach, which according to research, is one of the most effective in dealing with the problems of learning disabled pupils as well as weak learners. It also incorporates certain basic elements of the whole word approach since reading is taught in conjunction with spelling and writing.

READY, STEADY, READ comes with a pupil's book, a tape, and a detailed teacher's guide which provides a rationale for the approach chosen, teaching suggestions for all texts and exercises, suggestions for quizzes and emergency materials. Emergency materials include self-correcting exercises and games which can be used individually or in pairs. The purpose of these materials is to provide meanful learning for the class as a whole, whenever the teacher has to deal with the particular needs of individual members of the class.
